The 2012 Season starts today

November 6, 2011

The 2012 Rider Football season starts today.

Get out and get to work. There are lots of great Winter and Spring sports available at Roosevelt. If you already have a favorite, that’s great. If you are looking for a new sport and a way to improve your football skills, Wrestling in the Winter and Track in the spring are great compliments to Football.

Wrestling teaches you how to move your opponent and take him down. It teaches toughness and perseverance. After Wrestling, football practices will seem easy.

Track is about speed and conditioning. Track is co-ed. During a 3 hour track meet you will only run for a minute or two, leaving plenty of time to talk up the girls.

Doesn’t matter what you do, but the only way that the Roosevelt Football team can improve is by you getting out and working hard.

Roosevelt Football Community,

Here it is, only the end of January, and I am already excited about the upcoming season.  Many athletes are in the heart of their winter sport’s season, including football players who wrestle and do crew, as well as play la cross, basketball and winter baseball.   Many others are working out independently, either after school in our weight room with coach Katinas, or at their own gym.  It is awesome to see how many dedicated athletes we have here and I encourage even more of you to jump on the band wagon.  Working out is a great way to spend the 60 minutes after school.  It’s over quicker than you would think, and what else are you going to do?  Grab a friend and head to the weight room.

Another reason to be excited, with the finishing of first semester comes the start of our second semester 6th period advanced conditioning class.  Monday, we will have a class filled to the max of athletes wanting to push themselves much further.  A dedicated group that will be motivating each other and learning about their bodies while getting stronger, faster and healthier.  Get into the class next year if you missed out this year!

The Auction!  Our largest fundraiser of the year is next Saturday, the 4th of February at 5:30.  It is a great way to meet the Roosevelt Football Community while at the same time give a little extra to help all the sports programs here at Roosevelt.  The price to play sports is always increasing and your help may be the difference for someone else.  It is also the only way that we are able to have someone as qualified and involved as Leslie, our athletic trainer, working full time (and overtime) to ensure the safe recovery of our athletes.

On a side note, as is the case with the ever changing world of coaching, it appears that we will need to make some additions to the coaching staff next year.  If you, or someone you know is interested in becoming a coach, or just being more involved with this fantastic program, please, have them contact me through email; mbmuetingnelse@seattleschools.org.

Thank you all,  I look forward to seeing you at the auction!

It’s Auction Time!

December 27, 2011

Now that the Holidays are coming to a close, it is time for our football family to band together to get ready for the Rider Hall of Fame Auction! We need to procure as many items as possible, and to volunteer our time at the auction to make it as successful as possible. Please contact Beth Holand, bholand@comcast.net, to sign up for a shift and to let her know what amazing items you have procured for the auction!!

To purchase tickets, print out procurement forms, or donate go to the website: http://rooseveltathleticboosters.org/default.aspx

    Auction Details:

The Auction is February 4th at the Mountaineer’s Club on Sandpoint Way in Magnuson Park. You are encouraged to register ahead of time. It’s $40 per person with pre-registration; $60 at the door.

The Football team is responsible for data entry and checking in the guests. This means that we will need 25 athletes and parents over the length of the auction working 2 hour shifts, checking in the auction goers as they arrive and/or entering bids throughout the evening in the ‘war room’.

Procurement: Each family is asked to procure at least $300 in donations.
Items needed: They can be tickets (concerts, sporting events…), vacation homes, services and gift certificates
One suggestion that does well is items in Roosevelt colors – Floor pillows, quilts, scarves, mittens…
Ask a friend or a place that you frequent for a donation.
You can submit the forms electronically directly to Beth, and then we can gather the item closer to the event.
50% of the money raised from the Football Team’s procured items will go into OUR team’s direct account. The other 50% goes to a general Boosters fund that they team can request contributions from as well. This year we are using monies we raised last year to buy new uniforms for the varsity team.

The Auction donations and ticket purchases can now be made online. Go to the Booster’s website: http://rooseveltathleticboosters.org/default.aspx and click on “Auction” (in the left hand column). From there choose the sub-menu items “Donate” or “Purchase Tickets”.

All donations are due to Beth by January 23rd.

If you have any questions, or are really excited to be a part of this fun evening, please email me at bholand@comcast.net.

Thank you for your support!!
Beth Holand

Concessions Volunteers Needed!

November 28, 2011

Hey Football Families!

The season is over, but we still have events that are fun to do, while also raising money for the team! All of the sports teams take their turn working in the Concessions Stand for the basketball games. We just got our assignments, and the first shift is on Tuesday, December 20th.

We need four (that’s 4) parents to volunteer their time from 7:45 p.m. to close, selling drinks and snacks to the fans who come to watch the boys and girls JV and Varsity teams play against Newport.

It’s a lot of fun and 50% of the money brought in will go to football!

If you’re interested in volunteering, or want to know more about what’s involved, please contact Peter Nestingen panestingen@hotmail.com, Alice Nestingen avpoggi@hotmail.com or Jennifer Hatfield jjhat@golfornot.com.

Football Families,

We will be participating in the Fall Sports Awards Night on Tuesday, November 15th. Please be sure to have your Freshman, JV and Varsity players at Roosevelt by 6:45 p.m.

All Fall sports teams will meet in the Theater for the awards presentations – typically each team gives out just one or two awards – and then the teams move into other areas of the school for team awards and letter presentations. Traditionally, JV and Varsity football stay in the theater and the Freshmen meet in a classroom.

Families are more than welcome to attend all aspects of Awards Night. It’s a late night for everyone, but a great way to end the season.

We are working on possibly putting together something prior to the event. Last year we had potluck desserts on the mezzanine which were a big hit. We’ll keep you posted on the details, but wanted you to have the night down on your schedules as something that the kids need to attend. They definitely won’t want to miss it!

If you have any questions, suggestions or can help out in any way, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Roosevelt Rough Riders 14, Skyline Spartans 45
Oct. 29, 2011

It was Sr. Night for Roosevelt as the clouds cleared and the Space Needle provided a glowing backdrop. Wasn’t it great to see Carletti return to the field, leading with a strong tackle after the RHS kickoff? Skyline came out tough on their opening drive, but Curley and Mack, flanked by the defensive line, held the Spartans to a field goal. Nixon ran back 50 yards on the ensuing kickoff, and DiJulio countered with a first down. After an exchange of downs Nestingen took matters into his own hands and covered 52 yards on a loping run as the Green Machine made its presence known. Skyline bent but didn’t break and managed to get another field goal. Bennett had a terrific kick-off return, setting the stage for an exciting Nestingent to DiJulio to Holand pass/pass play that put Roosevelt on the board: RHS: 7, SHS: 13. Showing true Rider spirit, we recovered an onside kick and the Seniors were rolling. Nixon and Bennett logged first downs and Nestingen passed to Holand into the Red Zone. Alas, we missed the field goal by a hair and Skyline took over. Mack and Walmsley were tenacious on defense, but a bogus call against Shepherd after an awesome sack put Skyline in range again and the first half ended with RHS down 7-21.

The 3rd quarter was a defensive show as Farias and Hiyashi made key tackles, reinforced by Hartinger and Curley. Mack had a nice 12 yard run with Edwards providing space, but Skyline kept finding the endzone..It was in the 4th quarter that DiJulio, behind support from tired but never-say-die blockers, found his opening and sprinted 80 exciting yards, blazing over the line as he was crushed into the turf, resulting in a broken collarbone. Fighting to the end, Nestingen scrambled out of his pocket for another long run. Guity and Sievel provided key blocks as Hiyashi took a reception for a first down, and Mack drove forward for another. It was an All Senior finish and the crowd rose to its feet in an emotional send-off to the 13 seniors who have helped shape Rider Ball into what it is today: a fun, hard-working, respectful group of young men who know the value of a teammate and the strength of a team. We salute your accomplishments and wish you all luck in the future!

Roosevelt v Skyline 10/29/11

October 26, 2011

‎Roosevelt v Skyline. October 29th, 2011 8pm on Saturday at Memorial. Sr. Night follows.

Roosevelt 0, Woodinville 31
I address these recaps to the RHS Football Families and at the game last Friday it was the Rider Family that brought its offense and defense to the game for me. All of us watch each play – high fiving each other when someone makes yardage, seeking out the parents of the boy scoring a touchdown or putting out that strong defensive play. We wince at each fall and sigh in relief every time a player gets back on his feet. We are all in it together.

It was the second quarter and the Riders were down 24-0 in a tough match against Woodinville, a constant powerhouse in the league. I was jotting notes about key blocks and first downs when Bouldin went up for a pass and came down, literally, on his head. Time stopped for me, because Bouldin is mine, my boy, my youngest. I rose to my feet; there was nothing good about the way he landed, the way he laid there so still. But already the Family Offense was taking over. I felt hands reach out to me as I stared, providing unspoken support. I saw the powerful offensive team of two coaches and two doctors on the field, taking charge of my son. When his feet moved I broke out of my trance and, knowing my stuff would be safe, dropped everything and clambored down the steep steps toward the field. I heard the roar of the crowd when Mitchell sat up (he heard it, too – it was the first thing he remembered). There were arms around me as I waited on the sidelines, my friend finding me and providing a defense against the fear. Leslie, our trainer, came right up and starting filling me in. That woman could tell you your car had just gone off a cliff and somehow make you feel that it would be OK. The doctors from Children’s were thorough and calm, giving me theinformation I needed to defend against the unknown, welcoming me in the locker room and watching over Mitchell. I felt the power of the coaches, too, as they spoke quickly but fervently to me about Mitchell’s strength and resilience. Then came the questions and texts and phone calls from more of you in the stands, later the emails – everyone checking in. Asking not only about Mitchell, but about me, too. I hung on every word, every gesture that allowed me to be strong for my boy. The Roosevelt Family was there.

Mitchell had a concussion and is still out of school. I believe he will be fine, though he’s done playing for this year. Everyone who has been through the injury phase of football knows the possibilities and learns the recovery steps of head, bone, muscle and ego injuries. His friends have been very supportive, even canceling their Friday night plans when he couldn’t attend. This is a great group of boys. Dave, the night janitor at Roosevelt, pulled me aside last week to tell me what a terrific bunch the football players are – so respectful at school — especially the last two years. It is visible.

This is the family we are a part of. Though it’s never easy to watch our team lose or struggle, it is the strength of character that the coaches are building, the foundation of support that each family provides, and the lasting friendships that create the true offense and defense we need in this world.

Thank you.

Cindy B.
